White Springs Hope & Heritage Coalition wishes to lease Carver School Property

February 9, 2021

From:  White Springs Hope and Heritage Coalition (HHC)

To:   White Springs City Council Board

On behalf of the White Springs Hope and Heritage Coalition (HHC) greetings.  We are asking that this correspondence be read at the White Springs City Council meeting in order that we may receive approval from the White Springs City Council to lease the historical Carver School building and property.  We ask that the lease be approved for a nominal fee of $10.00 per year.   The lease agreement would allow for seeking grants and funds to be raised in order to transform the Carver School into a museum and community outreach/training center.  This will maintain a legacy that began in 1945 whereby the Carver School once housed all 12 grades for the children of the White Springs Black community until the closing of the school due to integration back in the 1970s.

Since its closure, the Carver School has languished in a state of abandonment which has resulted in the deterioration of the buildings and growth of vegetation within and around the perimeter of the property.  Given the rich history and significance that this school has played as the only educational facility for nearly three decades children in the Black Community.  It is incumbent upon all of us to ensure that the proud heritage and history of the school and those that graguated or taught at the school is preserved.

Upon approval of the leasing of the Carver School property and grounds, the HHC will agree to maintain insurance for the Carver School property, as well as take on the responsibility for initiating and engaging renovation and restorative work to be performed.  The HHC will work closely with the White Springs City Council throughout the process in a collaborative manner and will quarterly provide an update on the progress and status of actions undertaken to move forward with renovating the property, if necessary or as requested.

The members of the White Springs Hope and Heritage Coalition is a 501 (c) (3) applied for organization comprised of concerned citizens, current and former residents of White Springs, and those who have ties to the Carver School because of relatives or family members that attended, graduated or taught at the school.  The primary purpose of the HHC is to ensure the history and legacy of Carver School is remembered and cherished now and in the future.

Thank you for your time and we look forward to hearing from the White Springs City Council.   For additional information or questions, you may contact Mr. Djaun Graham via email at djuan.graham@gmail.com or telephone at (352) 209-3932 or Dr. Lawrence Davis via email at ldavis753@yahoo.com or by telephone at (386) 697-4002
