Chief Argatha Gilmore

Chief Argatha Gilmore assumed command of the Lake City Police Department on September 28, 2009. She retired from the Tallahassee Police Department as a Police Captain after serving 25 years at this agency. Chief Gilmore is Lake City’s first woman Police Chief and the first African-American Police Chief. She earned her bachelor’s degree in criminology at Florida State University and received a Master’s in Public Administration from Florida A & M University. Chief Gilmore is a graduate from the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy (FBINA 214) and also a graduate of Harvard John F. Kennedy School of State and Local Government. Chief Gilmore is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) where she serves as a committee member of the Executive Committee and the Juvenile Justice Committee. She is also a member of the Florida Police Chief Association (FPCA). She serves as a member of the FPCA Board of Directors representing the 3rd Circuit Chief Association. Chief Gilmore is the President of the 3rd Circuit Police Chief Association. Her department has 46 sworn officers and an annual budget of over $3 million.
