GET IT OUT OF THE SWAMP AND MAKE IT HURRICANE PROOF.

ANOTHER WASTE OF TAXPAYER MONEY

SIMPLY BECAUSE SOMETHING IS FREE OR ALMOST FREE DOESN’T MAKE IT ANY MORE REASONABLE TO SPEND IT.

Like the Amphitheater and the sidewalk to nowhere and the park with the three picnic tables and the boat ramp with handicap accessibility this Community Center is nothing but a long line of wasted money on a project that in six months no one will use. Shame on us.

And to top it off the Town Manager wants to put it in a swamp when perfectly dry land is begging to be used at no cost to the taxpayers, either state or local. And why does she want to put it where it is going? Just so she can demolish the old Carver School, I submit. Using grant money to advance a personal agenda, let’s get Nicki Williams. I’ve been in town over 20 years now and the shell of the old Carver School stands still. No amount of pleading will make it not so. We could have taken the money from the NEW unnecessary Community center and put it toward a refurbishment of the Old historic school. But no, that would make sense so the town Fathers and Mothers wouldn’t have any of it.

Wait a minute you say, isn’t the old Carver School in the same swamp as the proposed location of the new community center? Now you can make two choices here. One is that the old Carver School was built in an era when the White Power Brokers of the County wanted it in a swamp. The other is that because of the construction of the school on raised land it has stood for 60 years and not been “rained out”. The Powers that Be in White Springs say the same thing is true about the location of the Community Center. It won’t flood either, they say.

Take a walk in the proposed area, Next to the Carver School after it rains and tell me it won’t flood. Of course it will flood just like the land Stacy is proposing to the new community center. Its a mud bog. We could have mud bog races in that swamp. There is no dry land to be had.

Stacy claims that one of her jobs is to protect town property yet she wastes town property, the money from the grant and our contribution to the project. How long will it be before the Community Center becomes locked and of no use to the local residents, all in the name of protecting Town Assets.

No I say. Put the new community center on the North West Corner of the property near Reverend Sippio’s house. It’s dry land, heaven forbid, and the chance of crime happening that little removed from the school is great. The center will be open longer and of more use to the residents on the east side of the tracks.

Now Spencer and I don’t agree on much, maybe never, but his suggestion is to try for another grant to make the Community Center a hurricane proof building. That was what the building was “sold” to the town as. And unlike most of what Spencer says, It makes sense. No reason to build another amphitheater, or handicap accessible boat ramp or a Park no one uses or a brick sidewalk to nowhere, I urge the town to rethink the opportunity. Show some restraint. Make the building useful. Make it hurricane proof. And for goodness sake get it out of the swamp.
