We know you’re all still adjusting to your back to school routines, but we want to make sure you’re aware of a new law going into effect next Tuesday, October 1st. Florida Statute 316.306, a person may not operate a motor vehicle while using a wireless communications device in a handheld manner in a designated school crossing zone or school zone. This law also applies to work zones with workers present or where they are operating equipment in the area. This means no cellphones, tablets, laptops, messaging devices or electronic games while your vehicle is in motion in a school or work zone. This law is in affect 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, even if the school zone light isn’t flashing. My deputies will be enforcing this law. So, be hands-free so you can focus on your driving. After all, it’s for the safety of our children and workers. Thanks for tuning into our first FYI Friday. Be on the lookout for our next FYI and remember to put those handheld devices down.
