Tucker Carlson: Matt Drudge is ‘firmly a man of the progressive left’
July 26, 2020
Fox News host Tucker Carlson just ended the Drudge Report.
Once an influential conservative newsmaker, prominent news aggregator Matt Drudge is now “firmly a man of the progressive left,” Carlson declared on Friday.
Drudge made a name for himself in the media as an oppositional force during the presidency of Bill Clinton and became nearly indispensable as a news source for conservatives during the Obama years.
But in a short segment near the end of his program, Carlson accused Drudge and his eponymous Drudge Report of having changed dramatically since President Donald Trump has been in office, The Washington Times reported.
No different from “woke propaganda”
Carlson’s denunciation of Drudge came as an introduction to an interview with author Matthew Lysiak, who recently published a biography about Drudge. The interview was plagued with audio and technical issues and ended early when Lysiak’s feed abruptly failed.
“So, for decades Matt Drudge was one of the most influential figures in conservative journalism. His self-titled Drudge Report broke news and set priorities in digital media,” Carlson said.
“Republican presidential candidates made wooing the famously secretive Drudge a high priority, and for several of them, including Donald Trump, it paid off big,” he continued.
“But if you’ve seen the Drudge Report recently, you know that it has changed dramatically — 180 degrees. Matt Drudge is now firmly a man of the progressive Left,” the top-rated Fox host added. “At times, his site is indistinguishable from the Daily Beast or any other woke propaganda outlet posing as a news company.” Watch:
Carlson then set out to find out “what happened” by speaking with his biographer, Lysiak, who essentially boiled it all down to Drudge’s focus on his website’s “bottom line” more than any partisan loyalty. In other words, he determined that there were more clicks to be had in promoting anti-Trump media coverage.
The Drudge Report was indeed initially positive about President Trump, with Just the News noting that the Drudge site has transformed in the past year or two from a “fierce advocate and booster” of Trump to “becoming more hostile to Trump and notably less conservative in its offerings,” particularly with regard to the impeachment effort and now the handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
Other conservative news aggregators are stepping up to fill the void left in the wake of Drudge’s leftward lurch, including RealClearPolitics, Citizen Free Press, and The Liberty Daily.
