One of the things that the Charter Review Committee came up with (meaning Tracy Woodard because the other members of the committee never talked) was to have elections once ever four years instead of every year. Such foolishness is to be discussed at the Council meeting on Tuesday night.
Hell, we don’t follow the Charter anyway why fix it? Having the Likes of Tonja Brown elected for four years without a chance to remove her with an election is ludicrous. The reason Mrs. Woodard gave for the supposed change is that elections have become so divisive that it would be better to have the elections once every four years for each council member. Not giving the PEOPLE a chance to say whether a particular Council member is doing his or her job in accordance with the peoples desires is a sham to keep the do nothing Council in tact for a longer period of time.
Now the people get to vote on any change to the Charter at the next election in April but I say now, if we are not going to follow the Charter why fix it? If it ain’t broke don’t fix it! Imagine a Tonja Brown, a Rhett Bullard and specifically a Walter McKenzie (who has been on the Council since Jesus was a pup and has done nothing but attend meetings and allowed, and encouraged, the town to hire friends of the ruling class) for four years.
What if the State’s Attorney or some other law enforcement agency comes into town and changes the way the council spends it Local Option Fuel Tax money to come into compliance with the state law. Are we stuck with a bunch of ignorant fools who signed off on breaking the law to support frivolous spending by the Town Manager with no option but to accept it for four years?
It is conceivable that that is exactly what will happen.
IF IT AIN’T BROKE DON’T FIX IT I SAY.
